National outreach organisations tangibly united
at Engage Conference 2016
On 2-3 September a first national evangelism conference in many years was held in Tauranga. The Engage Conference attracted almost 200 key leaders and members, representing most denominations, and over 20 outreaching organisations. “The dynamic surprised me”, said conference facilitator, Dave Mann. “It is as if the traditional tensions between the pastors and evangelists dissolved, and a united focus and ethos for evangelism was achieved. The ‘buzz’ at the conference was quite something, and I’m still processing it.”
This unity was greatly enhanced by a gathering the day before by the leaders of 18 outreaching organisations. Their hearts were united as they shared what they saw God doing through their various efforts to serve and help churches.
The scale of the missional challenge we face was also noted. As many as 6 out of 10 non-Church people are unaware of having any church-going friends. Additionally, many church people are currently not actively seeking to connect those they know with Christ. As many as 80% of our nation’s un-churched people have no-one trying to connect them with the love of God.
Together these leaders affirmed the importance of intentional equipping of Christians and with sensitivity toward the changing cultural environment of our society.
“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people dwell together in unity…For there the Lord bestows his blessing…” (Psalm 133:1-3).
It is hoped this conference will be the first of many.
