Chainsawing for Jesus
2016
The Firewood Mission is a God-driven operation which exists to provide firewood free-of-charge to the poor, the desperate and the needy. It started in 2001 and now has a team of volunteers from churches including Hope Presbyterian and Riccarton Community Church, and is under the umbrella of the Hornby Presbyterian Community Trust. They operate from a site leased through the generousity and support of the Selwyn District Council. They work closely with churches, the Salvation Army, WINZ, CYF’s etc. In summer they cut, split, and stockpile firewood and then deliver the wood in winter. So far in 2016, they have delivered 261 cubic metres to 84 families!
The team starts each session with prayer and a safety brief. Because the ministry so totally relies on God to provide what it needs, they tell the recipients about God while they are at their house and suggest that a prayer of thanks be said to God each time wood is put on the fire. The team gives them a bookmark explaining the Firewood Mission and asks the recipients to pray for the Mission. They also ask the recipients if they would like the team to pray for them while they are there.
